GIRL SCOUTS ENJOY “LESSONS AT THE LANDFILL”
The lessons were informational and hands-on activities concerning waste disposal, landfills and recycling. The scouts were split into two age groups, and visited four 15-minute presentations on effective and environmentally friendly solid waste management. The younger children were exposed to the concept of how trash decomposes, a demonstration of heavy trash handling equipment, how the liner system at the landfill prevents groundwater contamination, and how recyclables are processed. The older children made recycled paper, learned how recyclables are processed, how groundwater sampling proves that the landfill is not polluting the environment, and how to “recycle right.” Because the excellent response we observed from the scouts and their parents,
SECCRA will plan to offer this event annually. Everyone makes trash.
To know what happens to it after it is put at the curb benefits
everyone. |
