EXPANSION UPDATE

As reported in previous issues of this newsletter, the SECCRA Community Landfill will be out of space in 2009. Our charter calls for meeting the disposal and recycling needs of the communities we serve. In 2003, we started the process of securing local and state permits to expand the landfill. We are about halfway through the state process, with the second of the two stage expansion application to be submitted soon. Locally, SECCRA will go through two sets of hearings with London Grove Township, one for a zoning challenge, and the other for issuance of a conditional use permit. Recently, the township’s Zoning Hearing Board ruled against the application brought before them. Since reliable, safe solid waste disposal is so important for the region, and because we believe the Zoning Hearing Board is in error, SECCRA is currently appealing this ruling in court. The conditional use hearing is still ongoing. For more information about this expansion and its importance, please visit our website at www.seccra.org.
