FAQ’s On SECCRA’s Tarp Policy

Does SECCRA require a tarp even for small loads from homeowners?
Yes. All loads in open beds or trailers must be covered with a securely fastened tarp.

What about loads that are heavy materials, like wood or shingles?
Yes. There are no exceptions.

Are there REALLY no exceptions?
Well, there is one. Any load that consists SOLELY of one bulk item, like a refrigerator or a mattress will be permitted without a tarp PROVIDED that it is secured to the vehicle with straps or bungee cords.

I heard that SECCRA sells tarps. Can I just buy one when I get there?
SECCRA does have tarps for purchase, but you will be required to fasten the load before weigh-in. SECCRA will take your license plate number and give the driver a warning. For any future violations, a fine will be issued.

May I just tuck my tarp under the load to hold it down if I don’t have any straps or bungee cords?
No. All tarps MUST be tied, strapped or somehow fastened to the vehicle.

Does the same apply for trash and compost that is already in bags?
Yes, even loads that are already bagged must be covered.
